A cat that limps after a fall from a balcony, a dog that swallows a foreign body during a walk: the subsequent veterinary consultation can cost several hundred euros. Pet insurance covers all or part of these expenses, depending on the policy taken out. In France, barely 5% of pet owners insure their companion, even though the offerings have significantly expanded in recent years.

Pet insurance and home insurance: a common confusion

Many owners believe that their home insurance already protects their pet. The reality is more nuanced.

The liability coverage included in home insurance covers damages that your pet causes to a third party (bite, property damage). It never reimburses veterinary care for your own animal. Fracture, tumor, poisoning: none of these fall under the liability coverage.

Dogs from categories 1 and 2 can even be excluded from standard home insurance coverage, leaving their owner without any protection in case of an incident. To clarify, the different plans referenced on pet insurance on Animal News allow you to compare what each type of contract actually covers.

In other words, two distinct protections exist: one for damages caused by the animal, the other for its own health. Confusing them means discovering the bill on the day of the emergency.

Veterinary costs in France: what an unexpected event really costs

Have you ever looked at the details of a veterinary bill after a surgical operation? The amount adds up quickly: imaging, anesthesia, hospitalization, post-operative medications. A major intervention can represent the equivalent of several months of food budget for the animal.

Veterinary costs are regularly increasing in France, driven by technical advancements (scanner, MRI, minimally invasive surgery) and rising operational costs of clinics. As a result, an uninsured owner sometimes faces a dilemma between their companion’s health and the balance of the family budget.

Pet health insurance changes this equation. Depending on the chosen plan, it reimburses a significant portion of consultations, surgical procedures, and treatments related to illness or accident. Some contracts also include a prevention package that contributes to vaccinations, dental cleanings, or antiparasitics.

Waiting period and pre-existing conditions: the traps of pet health insurance contracts

Taking out insurance for your dog or cat is not enough. You also need to understand the mechanisms that can reduce the actual coverage.

The waiting period

After signing, most insurers apply a period during which no reimbursement is possible. This waiting period varies from one contract to another and may differ depending on the nature of the claim (accident or illness). Check the duration of the waiting period before signing, especially if your animal already has vulnerabilities.

The trap of changing insurers

Changing insurance companies during the animal’s life is not trivial. The new insurer may impose a new waiting period and consider any declared or treated pathology during the previous contract as a pre-existing condition. A chronic illness diagnosed with the previous insurer may be excluded by the new one.

Before canceling, compare the conditions for taking over. Some contracts explicitly specify which pre-existing conditions remain covered and which are excluded. Here are the points to check:

  • The exact duration of the waiting period for accidents and for illnesses, which are often different
  • The list of exclusions related to age, breed, or known hereditary diseases
  • The conditions for coverage of already diagnosed conditions in case of changing insurers
  • The annual reimbursement limit and the coverage rate applied after the deductible

Beyond reimbursement: additional services to compare

The pet insurance offering is no longer limited to simple reimbursement of care. Several insurers now offer complementary services that can influence the choice of a contract.

Among these services: veterinary teleconsultation, available 24/7, allows you to obtain an initial opinion without traveling. This is particularly useful on weekends or at night when emergency clinics charge extra fees.

Other contracts include assistance in case of loss or theft of the animal, or coverage of boarding costs if the owner is hospitalized. The offering is even starting to extend towards prevention, with benefits paid in case of the animal’s death.

These services are not included in all plans. Compare the additional guarantees as much as the reimbursement rate: two contracts at the same price can offer very different daily services.

Taking out pet insurance: when is the best time to do it

Are you wondering what the best time is to insure your animal? The answer lies in a simple principle: the younger and healthier the animal, the more favorable the enrollment conditions.

With age, exclusions multiply and premiums increase. Most insurers set an age limit for enrollment, generally around eight to ten years for a dog and a little more for a cat. Once this threshold is passed, finding comprehensive coverage becomes difficult.

Insuring your animal from the first months avoids exclusions related to pre-existing conditions. The animal does not yet have a medical history, which simplifies acceptance and broadens the coverage scope.

The monthly cost of pet insurance remains moderate compared to the amount of a single veterinary emergency. For a dog or cat owner in France, the question is not so much whether an unexpected event will occur, but when. Anticipating this expense with a contract tailored to the breed, age, and lifestyle of the animal remains the most reliable way to protect both its health and your budget.
